A recent visit to AnTuTu has given away a lot more about the upcoming Nokia 9 than Nokia would like. Read the latest rumours on the Nokia 9 UK release date, UK price, features and specifications.
Earlier this year Nokia returned to the mainstream smartphone market with three new budget- to mid-range Android phones, the Nokia 3,5 and 6. Fantastic phones indeed, but we’re all holding out for the flagship Nokia 9, which is rumoured to be imminent — we could potentially see a launch on 16 August. (Also see: Nokia 2 rumours, Nokia 7 rumours and Nokia 8 rumours .)
The camera is now known to be a key selling point for the upcoming smartphone, with HMD Global confirming that Nokia’s collaboration with Zeiss optics is back on. Zeiss is reportedly «rekindling its commitment to set new imaging standards for Nokia customers».
This follows several leaks of a Nokia phone with a dual-lens camera. Most recently, new renders of the Nokia 9 have popped up online revealing a dual-camera setup at the rear. It’s pretty tasty looking.
A Nokia launch event has been confirmed for 16 August. It’s widely expected to be the Nokia 8 unveiling, but we could also see the arrival of the Nokia 9, and potentially the Nokia 2 and Nokia 7.
The Nokia 9 is expected to be the upcoming Nokia flagship, and will run the Snapdragon 835 processor. It will have a very similar specification to the Nokia 8, but the key difference will be the screen — here a 5.7in Quad-HD panel with an 18: 9 aspect ratio. The Nokia 8 is expected to feature a more standard 16: 9 5.3in screen.
This is demonstrated by a leak reported by NokiaPowerUser that shows the Nokia 8 with dual cameras and a physical fingerprint reader, alongside drawings of the supposed Nokia 9, which loses the fingerprint sensor to the rear while sporting a near bezel-less design.
The Nokia 9 should feature Gorilla Glass 5 and some form of waterproofing protection. It is also said to run Android Nougat and come with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, as well as an iris scanner and fingerprint scanner.
Performance is likely to be very fast, and Geekbench 3 results (we don’t know why they used the older version of the benchmark) published by GSMArena show some competitive scores from the Nokia 9.
The Nokia 9 reportedly scored higher than the Xiaomi Mi 6, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Huawei Mate 9, Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus with a score of 7,770 points in the multi-core component.
More recently the Nokia 9 has been spotted at AnTuTu, another benchmark, which has confirmed many of the things we thought we knew. That includes the Quad-HD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
More importantly, it reveals that not only is there a 13Mp camera at the rear, but there’s also a 13Mp camera at the front.
It’s been suggested that this rear camera could be a dual-camera, and with Carl Zeiss branding. Although the partnership between Zeiss and Nokia was thought to be no more, HMD Global has confirmed it is back on for future smartphones.
A 3,500mAh to 3,800mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0 support should also feature.
The new Nokia 9 is thought to be priced at around $800 or £634 with 128GB of storage, and $950 or £753 with 256GB.
Apart from the fact Nokia used to be one of the biggest brands in the mobile market (Nokia was the Apple of the early 21st century) , Nokia Android phones are interesting because they are said to be different to rival Android phones in three main ways:
• Through Nokia’s relentless focus on the everyday experience, whether that is seen in the display or the camera
• Through its premium design and build quality that is present no matter where in the line-up a model sits
• Through its use of the purest version of Android you have seen, with monthly security updates, fast Android platform updates and the implementation of the Google Assistant across the range
