Facebook has begun testing its Snapchat Stories-based model for the desktop. After bringing the feature to mobile device a few months ago, it seems Facebook is interested in expanding its usage.
Facebook Stories, a blatant clone of Snapchat Stories, is looking to make its debut on the desktop. Previously, this feature had only been available for the mobile version of Facebook, introduced in March, following the massive success of Snapchat and Instagram Stories.
According to TechCrunch, Facebook has confirmed that the Stories’ launch on desktop is still considered a test, but also mentions that a wider release is expected soon. On the desktop, it appears that Stories will be featured in the right panel of the website rather than on the top, which means that it will be less intrusive. It is unclear how many people actually use the ‘Stories’ ‘ feature, but according to some reports, it is deemed a »total failure».
Interestingly, the feature was also based on Instagram Stories — where it debuted a year ago — the daily usage of which managed to surpass Snapchat’s just a few days ago. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why Facebook has swiftly begun testing a desktop version of the service as well.
It is important to note that most people prefer to use Facebook on their smartphones, so the success of this upcoming feature depends not only upon its popularity at the current time, but also the amount of people who will even consider using it on their desktops. In any case, it’ll be interesting to see whether this release will significantly affect the overall daily usage of Facebook Stories.
