Six French soldiers were injured, two of them seriously, in a hit and run Wednesday in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret.
The incident took place around 8 a.m. local time outside military barracks in the northwest of the city. The driver managed to flee the scene after the attack, and an anti-terror unit is leading the investigation.
“When I saw the soldiers on alert I realized something serious was happening, ” local resident Tess Despres Pereira told FRANCE 24 . “Some tended to the injured while others sought to secure the neighborhood. It’s a very disturbing thing to see. You don’ t imagine this can happen in front of your home.
Levallois-Perret Mayor Patrick Balkany said there is “no doubt” that the incident was deliberate as the car “accelerated very quickly” when the soldiers left the barracks.
“A BMW pre-positioned itself in the alley and barreled into them, ” Balkany told BFM TV.
More than 230 people have been killed in terror attacks in France since the start of 2015. The country has been in a state of emergency for almost two years.
