«ruin the friendship and only forever are about nick and how she had feelings for him. what is going on this day?» another fan wrote .
«So basically Demi is saying that’s she’s waiting for Nick to make a move on her in Only Forever,» another person suggested .
Lovato tells the object of her affection to «Put down your cigar and pick me up (pick me up) / Play me your guitar, that song I love (song I love)» in «Ruin the Friendship,» and urges her love interest «to make a move» in «Only Forever.»
«You know when we get close / Can’t deny the tension between us both / And I don’t wanna pressure you, but I think you need to make a move / I’ve been waiting (I’ve been waiting) / And I’ll keep waiting (I’ve been waiting) / Only forever,» she sings.
Lovato confirmed in an interview with Vice’s Noisey published Wednesday that «Ruin the Friendship» and «Only Forever» are about the same person, but didn’t mention her crush by name.
«I was frustrated with a certain situation,» the star recalled. «And I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to write about it.’ And so I did, and sent [the songs] to that person, and that was interesting.»
«They knew [about my feelings], but neither of us had acknowledged [them] before,» she shared. «And then it turned out that person had written a song about me, and we exchanged songs. That person was like, ‘That’s an incredible song.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, well. It’s like, Hel-lo!'»
