Winless Florida State finds itself outside of the Top 25 for the first time since 2011 in the latest Associated Press poll released Sunday.
The Seminoles are 0-2 after Saturday’s 27-21 home loss to North Carolina State. Florida State was ranked 12th prior to the defeat that caused the plummet out of the rankings.
The Seminoles began the season ranked third. They dropped their opener to top-ranked Alabama and also lost standout quarterback Deondre Francois with a season-ending knee surgery.
The 0-2 start is Florida State’s first since 1989. On that occasion, they won their final 10 games to finish the season No. 3 in the nation.
The top five remains unchanged with Alabama still atop the rankings and defending national champion Clemson sitting at No. 2. Oklahoma is third, followed by USC and Washington.
The Crimson Tide received 52 first-place votes. Clemson got eight and Oklahoma received one.
Washington moved up one spot to No. 6, while Georgia (No. 7) and TCU (No. 9) moved into the Top 10. Georgia rolled to a 31-3 victory over Mississippi State, while TCU jumped up seven spots after notching a 44-31 victory over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys dropped to 15th and Mississippi State fell to No. 24.
Also in the Top 10 are Big Ten teams Michigan (No. 8) and Wisconsin (No. 10).
Another Big Ten program, Ohio State, slipped one spot to No. 11. It halts a streak of 42 straight polls in which the Buckeyes were ranked in the Top 10.
San Diego State of the Mountain West is ranked 19th, matching its highest ranking since 1978. The Aztecs are 4-0 for the first time since 1981.
Notre Dame (22nd) and West Virginia (23rd) moved into the rankings. Oregon, which was No. 24 before losing to Arizona State, joined Florida State in dropping out.
Virginia Tech, which plays No. 2 Clemson this Saturday, sits at No. 12. Auburn is 13th and Miami is 14th.
Washington State moved up two spots to No. 16 and prepares for Friday’s Pac-12 showdown against USC. The Cougars are followed by No. 17 Louisville and No. 18 South Florida. Utah is 20th and Florida is 21st.
LSU, one of six SEC teams in the poll, is No. 25.
