Pakistani troops managed to free a Taliban hostage family by shooting out the tires of the car that was carrying the captives, officials said Friday.
“Our troops fired at the vehicle and burst its tires,” a senior Pakistani security source said Friday, describing the car chase that occurred in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region near Afghanistan, according to Reuters .
After identifying the vehicle transporting the family, Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agents, aided by army soldiers, took down the vehicle after a lengthy car chase.
The kidnappers got away, largely because the agents refused to fire at them directly for fear of harming the hostages. The driver and another militant are believed to have escaped to a nearby refugee camp, Pakistani army military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor told NBC News.
Caitlan Campbell, her Canadian husband Joshua Boyle, and their three children were captured in October 2012 while hiking in the Wardak Province near Kabul. Until now, attempts to free Coleman and her family, as well as 2016 prisoner negotiations, were unsuccessful.
Details of the chase come after Boyle wouldn’t board a U. S.-bound plane Thursday because “he thinks he will face law enforcement and possible arrest,” a U. S. official said, according to CNN .
