Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday reportedly cast doubt on the effectiveness of a possible preemptive military strike on North Korea aimed at eliminating its nuclear capabilities, saying the isolated nation could have unknown stores of weapons.
“Can a global strike against North Korea be launched to disarm it? Yes. Will it achieve its aim? We don’t know. Who knows what they have there and where. Nobody knows with 100 percent certainty as it’s a closed country,» Putin said at an energy forum in Moscow, Reuters reported.
Putin also disagreed with President Trump’s approach toward North Korea, urging continued diplomacy and levelheadedness and calling for an end to the latest sanctions against the country.
The Russian president suggested that more sanctions would only hurt North Koreans, citing the nearly 40,000 from the country who work in Russia to provide financial support for their families at home.
