The 18-year veteran, who is also a father of two, is in “very, very grave condition.»
A veteran homicide detective was shot in Baltimore on Wednesday by a gunman who remains at large.
The detective was conducting a follow-up to a homicide investigation when he was shot in the head at 4:30 p.m. in the city’s Harlem Park neighborhood, the Baltimore Sun reported.
He approached a man exhibiting «suspicious behavior» on the 900 block of Bennett Place before he was gravely injured, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.
The 18-year veteran, who is also a married father of two, is currently on life support at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Davis said.
«This kind of violence can not be tolerated. To have one of our own out there trying to protect citizens of our city, to be gunned down like us, is just unacceptable,» Mayor Catherine Pugh said.
Police cordoned off streets and a tactical unit combed alleyways as they searched for a shooter, described as an African American male last seen wearing a black jacket with a white stripe on it, Davis said.
Numerous cruisers responded to the scene and a police helicopter buzzed overhead, illuminating streets below with a searchlight.
The Baltimore Police Department is soliciting tips from the public and offering a $60,000 reward.
The shooting Wednesday comes amid a particularly violent period in Baltimore. So far this year, the city of less than 620,000 inhabitants has seen more than 300 homicides.
