President Trump’s lawyers and press secretary have all declared flatly that he has no intention of firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Good.
Not that the denials have stopped the press corps from besieging the White House with questions in the wake of the indictment of Manafort.
Ousting Mueller or issuing pre-emptive pardons would only scream “coverup” when there’s still zero evidence of any Trump campaign collusion with the Kremlin.
But there’s something else the president should do: Turn off the TV.
Specifically, he should quit watching the cable news shows. Whether it’s his fervent supporters or his intractable foes like “Morning Joe,” Trump should tune out the noise.
Trump attorney Ty Cobb is right: There’s little the president can do about Mueller’s investigation without inflicting tremendous self-damage; he should “continue to cooperate” with the special counsel.
Another of his lawyers, Jay Sekulow, is even more emphatic: Trump can “only terminate a special counsel for cause, and we just don’t see any basis for cause.”
We understand the president’s frustration — and his desire to respond. Most of the media noise bears little relation to the facts.
But his best course, as Rich Lowry said on these pages Tuesday, is to sit tight. Anything else would only make things worse.
