During the debate on the Marriage Amendment Bill 2017, he looked up at the public gallery at his long-term boyfriend, who accepted his proposal.

His partner, Ryan Patrick Bolger looked on as the proposal drew applause and congratulations from the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
