“The high-end flip phone boasts a 12MP camera with highest-ever f/1.5 aperture”
The high-end flip smartphone from Samsung – W2018 – has been subjected to numerous leaks in the past with the latest being several live images of the device. It was speculated earlier that the South Korean company might launch the device on December 1st. And that turned out to be pretty accurate as the handset maker has now gone ahead and unveiled the device at a launch event held in Xiamen, China.
One of the highlights of the device is its 12-megapixel primary camera, which flaunts an aperture of f/1.5. With this, the device has become the world’s first smartphone to have the widest aperture, leaving behind the likes of LG V30 ( first impressions) and Huawei Mate 10, both of which sport cameras with an aperture of f/1.6. Samsung has designed the camera in such a manner that switches between f/2.4 and f/1.5, depending upon the ambient lighting. The front-facing camera on the handset is a 5-megapixel unit.
Moving on to the core specifications of the device, the Samsung W2018 flaunts a glass sandwich design with Gorilla Glass protection and a zinc alloy biaxial hinge. Flipping the device open brings up the D-pad and a numeric keypad. The display at the front is a Super AMOLED panel measuring 4.2-inches diagonally with full HD resolution and Gorilla Glass 5. The inner display too shares the same specs but it is not clear whether it has the Gorilla Glass protection. The performance of the device is powered by the top-tier Snapdragon 835 SoC supported by 6GB RAM. The phone is being offered in two variants – Extreme Edition with 64GB storage and Collector Edition with 256GB storage. There is a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel close to the camera module, and dedicated Bixby button as well. Out of the box, the handset runs Android 7.1.1 and is backed by a 2,300mAh battery.
The Samsung W2018 will be made available through China Telecom in the country, however, there is no word regarding the pricing. Buyers of the device will be provided with premium add-ons like concierge services at the airport / railway station, free software fixes, phone cleaning / disinfection, screen replacements at discounts and an exclusive hotline for VIPs. It’s unlikely that the device will be released globally.
