The suspect was identified as Akayed Ullah and was taken into custody.
A terror-related explosion in a below ground subway walkway at about 7:20 a.m. ET was reported at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in New York City near the Port Authority bus terminal, according to the New York City Police Department.
The suspect was identified as Akayed Ullah and was taken into custody. The 27-year old suspect strapped an improvised, low-tech pipe bomb to his body and intentionally detonated the device, officials said at a Monday news conference. The suspect suffered burns and other wounds and is in the hospital.
Four people were injured, including the suspect. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, the fire department said.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo called it a «terror-related incident.» Officials know of just this one individual and there are “no credible or specific threats to New York at this time,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press conference. President Trump was being briefed on the incident, the White House said.
The police are urging people to avoid the area and the NYCT Subway lines A, C and E were initially evacuated. But less than three hours after the blast, officials said all trains and buses were running, although the area around the blast was being bypassed. Port Authority was temporarily closed as officials conducted a sweep but has now been re-opened. Get the latest information on subway and bus delays at @nytcsubway and MTA.info .
