It was “lip gloss.”
Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) has an incredible political pedigree, but it was his lips that stole the show during his Tuesday night speech.
Kennedy was on hand to deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. While his speech was peppered with fanciful language and impassioned rhetoric, it was the shiny corners of his mouth that sparked social media buzz:

Pundits were quick to compare Kennedy’s glossy lips to Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) infamous 2013 Republican response to then-President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address. The Florida senator paused mid-speech to take a sip of water:
Kennedy addressed the buzz during an interview Wednesday morning on CNN’s “New Day.” He told host Alisyn Camerota it was “lip gloss,” though he later said it was ChapStick.
“Whatever it was, it was a little too much, apparently,” Kennedy said. “I should’ve put it on in the spotlight, and I didn’t. But Twitter has let me know, so hopefully I won’t make that mistake [again].”
