Yesterday, a Canalys report had suggested that Xiaomi was the leading smartphone vendor in India in Q4 2017, beating Samsung for the first time. Data from Counterpoint Research has now revealed that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was the most popular smartphone in India last year, while the Reliance JioPhone was the most popular feature phone in Q4 2017.
The latest data from Counterpoint Research shows the Reliance JioPhone captured 26% market share in Q4 2017, putting it comfortable ahead of Samsung. The South Korean company managed to grab only 15% of the total feature phone market in the same period. At the No.3 spot was domestic phone maker Micromax with a share of 9%. However, for the full year, Samsung managed to retain the top spot.
Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 was the highest selling smartphone in India in 2017. The No.2 spot was also occupied by a Xiaomi smartphone, the Redmi 4. At the third spot was the Samsung Galaxy J2. Three other Samsung smartphones figured in the Top 10 list – Galaxy J7 NXT, Galaxy J7 PRIME, and the Galaxy J2 (2016).
Domestic smartphone vendors such as Micromax and Lava reportedly did reasonably well last year, recovering from their all-time low during the demonetization period. Micromax Bharat and Lava Z series smartphones managed to gain a lot of popularity, with the Micromax Bharat 2 becoming the best-selling smartphone in the sub $75 segment last year. Xiaomi was the fastest growing brand last year, registering a whopping 259% rise over calendar year 2016. Following Xiaomi were Huawei (165%), Vivo (115%), and OPPO (104%). OnePlus was the fastest growing brand in the premium segment.
