DEARBORN, MI — A 37-year-old Dearborn man was shot Friday night in the street, and a Westland man suspected in the killing was arrested Saturday in Lenawee County.
«Based upon preliminary interviews it appears that the parties involved are acquaintances,» according to a statement from the city of Dearborn. «This is still an active investigation.»
Dearborn police first were called about 8 p.m. for a «man down» in the area of Whittington and Canterbury streets, at the southeast corner of the city.
Emergency personnel found the man had an apparent gunshot wound to the head and died as a result, police reported.
«Crimes of this magnitude are extremely rare in the City of Dearborn and the loss of life in this incident is profoundly tragic,» Chief Ronald Haddad said in an earlier statement. «Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and we are committed to utilizing every resource at our disposal to bring the person(s) responsible to justice.»
Police were able to identify a «person of interest» and the vehicle he might have been driving. The investigation led police to an address in Hidden River South, a manufactured housing community in Madison Township, south of Adrian and about an hour southwest of Dearborn. Officers called the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office for aid and police found the vehicle, the sheriff’s office reported in a statement.
Dearborn police and the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team arrived. The man fled on foot and was arrested a short time later, about 8:30 a.m. Feb. 24, in a parking lot between Bigby Coffee and Aldi, off U. S. 223, according to the sheriff’s office.
Dearborn police do not believe there are any other suspects, the sheriff’s office reported.
Information on the homicide will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to determine what, if any, charges are warranted.
