Jolla is a name that doesn’t come up very often. Largely because there really isn’t much to say about the Sailfish OS since the accompanying devices failed. However, the company is still in the business of pushing mobile operating systems and has announced Sailfish 3 at Mobile World Congress.
Positioned as a DIY alternative operating system, Sailfish 3 remains as a paid option for those who want to root and replace the OS on their phones. It will also be shipping out of the box with a select number of new devices (which probably won’t be seen here in Malaysia).
Sailfish OS compatibility is being expanded to include the Sony Xperia XA2; along with the upcoming Gemini PDA and a Russian tablet brand known as INOI.
More importantly, Sailfish 3 will also be extended to feature phones. This requires a bit of reworking the interface, seeing that most of these budget devices don’t have a touch display. It sounds like Jolla is designing the OS to work with directional control pads or number pads for navigation.
Sailfish 3 is set to be released in autumn of this year.
