Facebook isn’t having the best week, and it just got worse for the firm.
A few hours ago, a memo by Facebook VP Andrew “Boz Bosworth emerged, advocating a belief that growth was good for Facebook, despite anything that could be negative.
We connect people. Period. That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified. All the questionable contact importing practices. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it.
…
So we connect more people,” he wrote in another section of the memo. “That can be bad if they make it negative. Maybe it costs someone a life by exposing someone to bullies.
Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools.
The memo was titled “The Ugly”, highlighting the Ugly part of Facebook’s ambitions, and was only every circulated internally.
Bosworth, upon the memo coming to light, said on Twitter that he doesn’t “agree with the post today and [he] didn’t agree with it when [he] wrote it,”
Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg told BuzzFeed that he had strongly disagreed with the memo, stating that Facebook had “never believed the ends justify the means.”
Be that as it may, Bosworth was put in charge of the firm’s consumer hardware efforts.
All we can add is Facebook’s PR department probably hopes that next week goes much better than this one.
