The Sunshine State has had it with “fall back, spring ahead.”
Enough with the “fall back, spring ahead.”
So said Florida lawmakers this week when they approved a bill to keep Daylight Saving Time all year instead of ending it in November.
The State Senate took “less than a minute” to pass the Sunshine Protection Act — with just two nay votes. The bill passed in the House 103-11 on Feb. 14.
Next step for the proposed legislation: Gov. Rick Scott. But even if he approves, the change “will literally take an act of Congress,” notes CN N.
Get it right, people: It’s not Daylight Savings Time
If there’s a full greenlight down the road, residents of the Sunshine State won’t have to tweak their clocks twice a year.
Like this Sunday, when they and most other Americans will set their clocks ahead one hour when DST begins.
Hawaii and Arizona already are exempt from the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which ensured that states observing DST began and ended the time adjustment on the same dates.
Arizona, Hawaii, and the territories like Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and American Samoa do not use DST. They get enough sunshine, and the added hour of light in the summertime isn’t seen as a plus.
Massachusetts wants to ditch Daylight Saving Time
Start and stop dates have changed over time for DST. Since 2007, it has been bookended by the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
