Apple is finally putting an end to one of its devices this year. The Cupertino-based tech firm, popular for its iPhone and iPad devices, has officially discontinued an entire hardware line up. The series includes three devices namely the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule.
NEW DELHI: Apple is finally ending production its AirPort line of base stations. The Cupertino-based tech firm, popular for its iPhone and iPad devices, has officially discontinued the entire hardware line up that includes three devices, namely the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule.
The confirmation for discontinuing the AirPort series came directly from the company spokesperson “We’re discontinuing the Apple AirPort base station products. They will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last,” said the spokesperson to iMore.
Besides selling these devices till supplies last, Apple will also be helping customers get service and other parts for AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule. The firm, in the next few weeks, is said to port knowledge-base articles, helping customers to transition away from AirPort devices.
This move by Apple shouldn’t come as a surprise for many as it was already working on discontinuing the series. According to a Bloomberg report from 2016,Apple stopped development on the series and the engineers in the particular division were reassigned to other products. The company has also not updated its AirPort products ever since 2012, when it launched the Express. AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule came in 2013.
Apple has put out a dedicated page where in it has suggested what Wi-Fi router you should use with Apple devices. The router should support IEEE 802.11ac connectivity, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) network, WPA2 Personal (AES) encryption and MIMO or MU-MIMO.
On a related note, Apple is said to junk the ‘notch’ from its iPhone devices in future. Since Apple is known to keep itself away from mainstream, a new found patent indicates that the company may be going back to the old, notch-less screen design. This also falls in line with the recent rumours indicating that the iPhone handsets in 2019 will be completely ditching the notch.
