As more information is being released about suspected YouTube campus shooter Nasim Aghdam, it has been revealed the 9mm handgun Aghdam used for her attack was legally owned and registered to her.
“She legally possessed and owned the weapon,” Police Chief Ed Barberini said Wednesday. “I do not know where it was purchased.”
Barberini added Aghdam practiced at a local gun range the morning of the shooting and that there is no evidence so far to show her attack was related to terrorism.
Police say the leading motivation for her attack was due to her YouTube channel being flagged for demonetization, which meant ads were no longer allowed to play before her video, cutting off a main source of revenue.
“She was upset with policies and practices at YouTube,” Barberini said.
The Mercury News reports Aghdam’s family did not know she owned a handgun: “I didn’t know she has a gun. I thought she might go there and start a fight or something and then the cop told me he would keep an eye on her.”
