A person of interest in connection to a November homicide, who escaped from Henry Ford Hospital Tuesday, is back in police custody.
A person of interest in a homicide last November at a Highland Park apartment complex is back in custody after escaping from Henry Ford Hospital, according to authorities.
According to the Detroit Police Department, Joseph Ivan Gray, 37, turned himself in at the 12th Precinct on Wednesday, and they notified Highland Park Police.
Gray is considered a person of interest in a fatal stabbing of a 62-year-old maintenance at the apartment building on West McNichols and several other cases, according to police.
«This was a guy that was extremely armed and dangerous, he’s got, again a violent criminal past and we are relieved. People that are involved in this case, that we’ve spoken to through this investigation are relieved,» said Highland Park Police Det. Brian Menge. «Everybody was on high alert during this, so we had extra patrols and officers that were keeping an eye on our city knowing that he could potentially be around.»
Menge said Gray originally was picked up by police early Saturday morning. He was taken to the hospital for treatment on Tuesday, Menge said.
Highland Park Police Chief Chester L. Logan said he believes Gray used his alleged illness as a ruse to make an escape attempt. He would not elaborate on how Gray slipped police custody or exited the hospital.
«It was disappointing,» Menge said.
Police believe Gray was using DDOT buses to get around.
Authorities the publicity about the escape was the deciding factor in Gray’s decision to turn himself in.
«I think the amount of pressure that was put on this case forced him to turn himself in,» Menge said. «It was only a matter of time that he was going to get apprehended.»
