During a recent investor meeting, EA boss Andrew Wilson confirms that the next entry in its first-person shooter series, Battlefield, will have single-player.
According to a recent report, Call of Duty could be eschewing a single-player campaign altogether in Black Ops 4 in favor of focusing more so on the Activision franchise’s more favored staples of multiplayer and Zombies. This move by the Electronic Arts first-person shooter series’ rival won’t influence the company’s Battlefield V, though, as EA boss Andrew Wilson confirmed that the forthcoming sequel will contain “compelling single-player stories”.
This much was confirmed during a recent Electronic Arts investors meeting in which Wilson talked up the next Battlefield in all of its in-game permutations from single-player to “the next level of large-scale multiplayer that spans across multiple maps and modes.” Unfortunately, though, the EA boss failed to go further into detail when it comes to defining exactly what he meant by “single-player stories”.
While this is just conjecture, it’s quite possible that Wilson’s usage of “single-player stories” is indicative of the next Battlefield following the same campaign model of its precursor, Battlefield 1, as the narrative unfolded from the perspective of multiple different characters. That said, though, we will have to see what this particular phrasing means once Electronic Arts shares more about the title, which will most likely be during EA Play at E3 2018.
There’s no doubt that most, if not all Battlefield diehards will be glad to hear that the next entry won’t be ditching single-player, but some may be even more intrigued by the prospect of the sequel’s potential Battle Royale mode. According to the rumor, Electronic Arts intends on adding a mode that features gameplay similar to Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Of course, much like with the vaguely defined structure of the single-player campaign, we will simply have to wait for more official details to come from EA to see if the mode even makes the cut.
Battlefield V has yet to receive an official announcement, release date, or confirmation of platforms.
