A single-engine plane crashed in New Jersey on Wednesday, killing the pilot and setting blaze to a wooded area, emergency officials said.
May 2 (UPI) — A single-engine plane crashed in West Milford, N. J., on Wednesday, killing the pilot and setting blaze to a wooded area, emergency officials said.
The Piper PA-32 crashed in the woods near Greenwood Lake Airport shortly after taking off around 2:30 p.m. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service responded to the scene to put out a brush fire sparked by the crash. The crash happened at the former Jungle Habitat theme park.
The incident also brought down power lines and caused a power outage to about 1,000 nearby residences.
«We disconnected a circuit so that the first responders could work safely there,» Michael Donovan, a spokesman for Orange and Rockland Utilities said.
The National Transportation Safety Board launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
