President Trump honored World War II veteran and former senator Bob Dole for his lifetime of service during a Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery Monday.
The president was thanking all of the men and women who have risked their lives to protect the lives of Americans, when he said, “America’s legacy of service is exemplified by a World War II veteran who joins us today, Senator Bob Dole.”
After a long ovation, Trump continued, “Earlier there year, I was fortunate to present — earlier this year, I was fortunate to present a very special award to Bob, the congressional gold medal.”

Back in January, Senator Dole was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition for “his service to the nation as a soldier, legislator and statesman.”
He added, “Bob, thank you for honoring us with your presence, and thank you for your lifetime of service to our nation. Today we remember your fallen comrades who never returned home from that great struggle for freedom.”
Prior to his speech, Trump laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. (RELATED: Trump Issues Memorial Day Message)
