WASHINGTON, U. S. — In a bid to defend himself publicly from the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, the U. S President Donald Trump now has a plan.
According to a report in the Washington Post, which quoted 22 unnamed sources from the White House, Justice Department and “Trump confidants and attorneys connected to the probe,” that Trump has privately told associates he needs better “TV lawyers” to defend him publicly from Mueller’s probe.
The report added, “Trump gripes that he needs better ‘TV lawyers’ to defend him on cable news and is impatient to halt the ‘witch hunt’ that he says undermines his legitimacy as president.”
One confidant quoted in the report revealed that the president shows frustration with the FBI raids on Cohen “as often as 20 times a day.”
Last month, the FBI raided Cohen’s office and seized emails, tax documents and records related to his $130,000 payment to Daniels.
A day after the raid, Trump had tweeted, “Attorney Client privilege is now a thing of the past. I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken. All lawyers are deflated and concerned!»
It further quoted these sources as describing the president’s as scrambling “for survival” amid the probe while plotting his next moves with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani joined the president’s legal team at the end of last month and has already made several shocking claims.
In a May 2 interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Giuliani said that Trump had reimbursed his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, for the $130,000 payment to porn film star Stormy Daniels.
Disclosing the reimbursement set off a media firestorm especially since Trump has previously stated that he isn’t aware of the alleged payment made to Daniels, who claims to have had an affair with the President.
Since then, in subsequent interviews, Giuliani has attempted to clarify his remarks, arguing that Trump didn’t know the money was being used to silence Daniels about the alleged 2006 affair with the then reality TV star and real estate mogul.
The report comes at a time when Mueller’s probe has exerted its second year and is inching closer to the White House and Trump’s inner circle.
Commenting on the report, which paints a picture of “disarray and defiance” in the White House, Giuliani was quoted as saying, “We’re on the same wavelength. We’ve gone from defense to offense.”
The report meanwhile said, “The Mueller operation, like the former Marine Corps platoon commander who leads it, is secretive and methodical. Ten blocks west in the White House, President Trump combats the probe with bluster, disarray and defiance as he scrambles for survival.”
