Republican Rep. John Faso said President Donald Trump should stop the highly contentious “zero tolerance” immigration policy that is resulting in children being removed from their parents at the border.
The upstate lawmaker, who attended Tuesday’s meeting on immigration with Trump and other GOP House members on Capitol Hill, said Congress should fix the law that separates children after their parents are charged and the president should quit the policy.
Asked on CNN if Trump is correct in asserting that the Democrats are at fault, Faso said the president is talking about a law that requires a migrant who is arrested be held in a facility where children can’t be detained.
“In the overall context of this situation he’s not correct,” he said. “Because right now we should act – Democrats and Republicans – to change the law and he should act to change the policy.”
Faso, who is running unopposed for his second term in a district Trump won in 2016, said the president could take action immediately to end the separations.
“The immediate issue I think the administration could deal with – and frankly no one is going to sue them over this question – if they were to temporarily house the immigrants with their children together.”
Faso’s district is being targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and seven Democratic candidates are on the primary ballot next week to challenge him in the November mid-terms.
