Rumors begin circulating online that Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas writer Chris Avellone is writing the script for the recently announced Fallout 76.
Since Bethesda announced Fallout 76 a few days ago, rumors have been swirling about the upcoming game. One rumor making the rounds is that writer Chris Avellone, known for his work on past Fallout games like Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, is involved with writing the game’s story. Unfortunately for anyone who was excited about Avellone’s possible involvement, however, he has confirmed that he is not working on Fallout 76.
Avellone took to Twitter to deny his involvement with Fallout 76, debunking the rumors that he is writing the game’s script. While it’s possible Avellone is working on the game and is simply denying it to keep his involvement a surprise, it seems unlikely. If he were secretly working on the game, it would make more sense for him to ignore fan questions and avoid addressing it publicly until given the go-ahead by Bethesda.
As for where these rumors came from, they appear to stem from a 4chan post that has been making the rounds on various internet forums. This post makes some other bold claims about what Fallout 76 will have in store for players, claiming that it will be a traditional Fallout RPG despite more reputable sources saying it will be an online multiplayer Rust clone instead.
It’s always wise to take rumors with a grain of salt, especially if they are posted without any evidence or come from unproven sources. It’s unfortunate for fans of Avellone’s work that he isn’t working on the game, but hopefully they didn’t take the rumors surrounding his supposed involvement with Fallout 76 at face value.
In the meantime, there is still very little we know definitively about Fallout 76 and what kind of experience it will deliver to fans of the franchise. However, Fallout franchise lore does give us somewhat of an idea of what to expect, including the potential that the game is set in West Virginia and will be about the first vault that was opened after the events of The Great War.
While lore from past games do offer an idea of what Fallout 76 has in store, fans will have to wait for Bethesda’s E3 2018 press conference on June 10 to be sure what it’s bringing to the table.
Fallout 76 is in development for unspecified platforms.
