In an interview with Giant Bomb, Spencer stated that frame rate is an area he thinks that consoles could do more in.
During Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, Xbox head Phil Spencer dropped an interesting tidbit of information in that the company was deep into development on the next Xbox consoles (plural). With the Xbox One X out on the market for around seven months now, players have had a taste of what a next-gen console could be capable of. It offers 4K resolution and HDR, with the benefit of other visual enhancements and 60FPS on certain games. However, Spencer believes Microsoft can still do better.
In an interview with Giant Bomb, Spencer stated that frame rate is an area he thinks that consoles could do more in. This was prompted by a question from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Gerstmann who asked Spencer about what he envisions the next Xbox will “have to have.”
“So when you pie-in-the-sky think about what that next box is,” asked Gerstmann. “When you start this process, maybe even pre-R&D, when you sit and look at the Xbox brand, the Xbox line of consoles and think about that next thing. What are the things that you look at and go ‘well we have to have this?’”
Spencer dove into the question by quickly bringing up frame rate. “If you watch what we’re doing on the Xbox consoles right now like variable frame rate, looking at higher frame rate capability,” he said. “I think frame rate is an area where consoles can do more just in general. You look at the balance between CPU and GPU in today’s consoles and they are a little bit out of whack relative to what’s on the PC side so I think there is work that we can do there.
“I’m always wishing games would start quicker,” he continued. “We announced Fast Start… We’re as guilty as anybody… a game I’m playing a ton of, State of Decay, it tells you ‘Ready to Start’ and I get to sit there and watch from the title screen [while it] installs the rest of the game.”
