News, for example, suggested that “retailers have been distancing themselves from the brand, making it difficult for many shoppers to even find items in stores.” The Wall Street Journal reported that online sales via Amazon, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Zappos dropped 45 percent over the last year.
Other media suggest that Trump is dumping out of the clothing market because she “ faced scrutiny for her commercial enterprises .”
Trump suggests, for her part, that the brand is closing because she needs to focus on her work in Washington, D. C. She explained, “After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.”
The company stated that the decision “has nothing to do with the performance of the brand and is based solely on Ivanka’s decision to remain in Washington indefinitely.»
It’s worth noting that for all the hubbub about Ivanka’s supposed failures here, last year Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, showed $82 million in outside income; since 2016, Ivanka made some $12.6 million between 2016 and 2017, including $6 million from her fashion line.
So far, there’s been no evidence that Ivanka’s fashion line was in any way affected by her job in the White House.
