In November last year, Xiaomi launched the Redmi 5A entry-level Android smartphone in India, dubbed as the “Desh ka Smartphone”. Aimed at the masses, the Redmi 5A combines an attractive design with decent hardware specifications and impressive battery life for an entry-level offering. Even after six months of its debut in the Indian market, the Redmi 5A remains one of the best entry-level smartphones that you can purchase. If you are thinking of buying one, you can try ordering one today at 12 PM on Flipkart.
The Redmi 5A is available in two variants – 2GB RAM + 16GB internal memory and 3GB RAM + 32GB internal memory. The 2GB RAM + 16GB storage variant is priced at Rs.5,999, while the 3GB RAM + 32GB internal memory variant is priced at Rs.6,999. In terms of color options, the Redmi 5A comes in Gold, Grey, and Rose Gold colors.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A ( review) boasts of a 5.0-inch 720 x 1280 HD resolution fully-laminated IPS display with 1000:1 static contrast ratio and 296 PPI pixel density. It comes with a Reading mode, which is claimed to protect user’s vision and reduce eye fatigue by filtering out harmful blue light emitted from the display. Running under the hood is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz with an Adreno 308 GPU clocked at 500 MHz. Xiaomi has coupled the quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM in the base variant and 3GB of RAM in the more expensive variant. As for storage, the 2GB RAM variant of the smartphone includes 16GB of internal memory, while the 3GB RAM variant is equipped with 32GB of internal memory. For further expansion, the Redmi 5A has a dedicated microSD card slot that accepts up to 128GB cards in the VFAT format.
In the camera department, the Redmi 5A is more or less on par with most other smartphones available in the entry-level segment currently. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/2/2 aperture lens, phase-detection autofocus, and an LED flash. For selfies, the Redmi 5A sports a 5-megapixel snapper on the front with an f/2.0 aperture lens.
Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, Bluetooth HID, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, an IR blaster, and 4G VoLTE. One feature that the Redmi 5A lacks is a fingerprint sensor. Some of you may consider this to be a deal-breaker as many of the newer entry-level Android smartphones do come with a fingerprint sensor. However, the Redmi 5A does manage to deliver superior battery life compared to many of its rivals, thanks to a 3000mAh capacity battery coupled with system-level power optimization. Xiaomi claims the Redmi 5A can offer up to 7 hours of video playback and 6 hours of gaming. In terms of physical size, the smartphone measures 140.4 x 70.1 x 8.35mm and weighs in at 137 grams.
Xiaomi had launched the Redmi 5A last year with the Android 7.1.2 Nougat-based MIUI 9 out of the box. Earlier this year, the company began rolling out the MIUI 9.2 Global Stable ROM update to the device, adding a few new features. The Redmi 5A will soon be receiving the MIUI 9.5 Global Stable ROM update with features like quick reply, Notification Shade, and more.
