Fortnite’s Senior PR Manager confirms that the Gamescom Pooper story that was making the rounds on the Internet is not real, but what a tale it was.
Late last week there was a story making the rounds regarding a Gamescom attendee that defecated in a bag while waiting in line to play Fortnite. It was an odd story but one that some started to believe. Now, Epic Games has come out to say no such incident occurred during Gamescom.
As the story goes, one Fortnite fan was waiting in line to play the game and, more importantly, get a Gamescom exclusive spray. Apparently, said fan had to go to the bathroom but didn’t want to lose their place in line and so they decided to use a nearby bag as a toilet.
The story spread like wildfire on forums and the game’s subreddit, but interestingly no Gamescom attendees could corroborate its details. One would think that in this day and age of social media, someone defecating into a bag would make the rounds.
Eventually, though, Epic Games Senior PR Manager Nick Chester took to Twitter to confirm that the story was fake. Again, if an incident like this took place at Epic’s Gamescom Fortnite booth, the developer would have surely heard about it, if not smelt it.
But the reason so many believed the story has more to do with the crazy lengths gamers will go to acquire exclusive rewards and the popularity of Fortnite. Even if someone didn’t want the Fortnite spray for themselves, they could likely flip it on secondary markets for a nice sum. Right now, there are several listings for the Fortnite Gamescom skin on eBay with asking prices of around $100. For those that are curious, the spray features a Loot Llama wearing a pair of sunglasses and a gold chain.
So, despite how great a story it was, the Gamescom Pooper is not a real person. But Fortnite is still insanely popular, and fans are dying to get their hands on limited time rewards, so perhaps in the future someone may go to those types of lengths to get something special.
Fortnite is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, and Switch.
