The longtime Congressman from Arizona died Saturday at his Sedona ranch, days after his family said he’d stopped treatment for brain cancer.
As word spread Saturday that war hero and Republican Senator John McCain had died at his Arizona ranch after a year-long battle with brain cancer, the public that he’d served during his 35-year political career lined the highway overpasses for a last goodbye.
A police motorcade led the black hearse with McCain’s body from his ranch near Sedona out onto southbound Interstate 17, the Associated Press reported. People gathered at every overpass and exit ramp for the next 50 miles to watch the procession, some waving American flags.

In his memoir «The Restless Wave,» McCain wrote: «I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war and helped make a peace… I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.»
