Netflix has added five new devices to its HDR list that include Honor 10, Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, LG G7, LG V35, and the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 9. The media services provider started with a handful of smartphones last year but kept updating the list with more devices. As of today, the list is flooded with a huge number of devices from various tech player except for Nokia.
The Netflix HD support list contains a variety of devices including smartphones and tablets from major gadget makers. Starting with Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Netflix certified LG V30, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, and the Sony Xperia XZ1 among the others last year. This year, the video streamer has added devices which include the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 9 along with the Galaxy Tab S4. Other devices include the Huawei MediaPad M5 10 Lite, MediaPad T5 10, Honor 10, the recently launched Huawei Nova 3, LG G7, and LG V35.
In order to stream the Netflix content in HD or HDR, you will need a UHD subscription along with the latest version of the Android app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. For Apple users, you will need to update to the latest iOS.
If you are streaming Netflix on your TV, you will need to have a TV that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR and Netflix. Also, note that if you have a set-top box to stream the Netflix content, the set-top box must also support HDR format. There must be a 4 screen Netflix plan along with a steady internet connection speed. Set the streaming quality to high and you are good to go.
Besides smartphones and tablets, the other devices that support Netflix HD/HDR include Apple TV 4K, Chromecast, UltraEntertainTV by Deutsche Telekom, Nvidia Shield and Nvidia Shield Pro, Roku Premiere+ and Roku Ultra, PlayStation 4 Pro, TDC TV Box, UHD Swisscom TV-Box, Virgin Media – V6 powered by TiVo, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.
Netflix started rolling out HDR support two years back with the first season of its original series ‘Marco Polo’. The video streamer started with 4K Ultra HD TVs released in 2016. Speaking on the release, Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said, “I think HDR is more visibly different than 4K,” told Digital Trends in February. Over the past 15 years, we have had plenty of increments of pixels on the screen, and from what we saw with digital cameras, pixel count eventually stopped being interesting.”
Notably, Netflix is not the only one with HDR support. Amazon Prime Video got into the game from 2015. However, the audience had mixed reactions when it comes to the HDR experience on Amazon Prime as compared to that on Netflix. The Netflix experience has improved a lot over time. Let’s see if Amazon catches up soon. There are constraints like internet speed that could create glitches in the viewing experience.
