A bare-chested man tried to get the goat of Newark, NJ, cops by jumping up and down on the roof of three separate patrol cars, but the officers kept their cool, according to video of the incident posted Saturday.
The man, who wore only red high-top sneakers, shorts and a black cap, was seen jumping on the first patrol car – with two officers inside — while shocked passers-by pulled out their phones to capture the scene on camera.
The officers stayed in their car while the man talked to them through the window and then went back to jumping on the hood of the vehicle, according to the footage.
“He’s going crazy, must be on some type of drugs,” one passer-by is heard commenting . “Where’s the backup?”
Within 2 minutes, two other police cars joined the scene, and officers approached the man as he bounced up and down on the black and white car’s hood.
But the man ignored officers — and then started jumping on the roofs of the other two cruisers.
When the man got into the face of one officer, who was seen trying to calm him down, someone in the crowd yelled, “Don’t do it, bro, back up!”
The man eventually turned his back and walked away from the officers. As the video ends on a pan of a side street, someone is heard commenting: “He ran away.”
It is unclear if the man was later arrested.
Newark police didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
The post began going viral Monday, with 464,000 views by the afternoon.
“It’s OBVIOUS the fella is out of his mind. Newark and Newark Police should be PROUD of its officers after this display,” commented Cynthia Oneday Flood.
Added James A Whitfield Jr: “What’s lost in this video Is the outstanding job these police did in this case.
“He could have said, ‘I was scared so I shoot him’ instead he waited for backup and then talked him down. Share this video everywhere.”
