Google has unveiled the latest Android distribution numbers that is dated on September 28,2018. Interestingly, the latest mobile OS version, Android 9.0 Pie has still not been able to make its debut in the list, indicating that it is on less than 0.1% of all the smartphones in the world. The OS version started rolling out to Pixel devices in early August and later reached to Essential Phone followed by OnePlus 6 and more recently on Nokia 7.1 Plus smartphone.
It is worth adding that this is the second Android distribution list coming in September, suggesting that the search giant is moving on to the later schedule instead of early which it has been following until now. The firm has been inconsistent in giving out the distribution numbers as July numbers were delayed and the June Android distribution number list was skipped.
Latest Android distribution chart is out, majority still using two-year-old version
August has been one of the most important months for Google as it not just revealed the official name of Android P – Android 9.0 Pie in that month but also started rolling it out to smartphones. Since the new OS version reached only few smartphone models that were in the Android P beta program, it has not yet made a debut in the August 2018 Android distribution list, which breaks down how many percentages of users are on which Android version.
As for the numbers, Android 8.0 and 8.1 Oreo together constitute of 19.2% of all the Android smartphones, which the majority (13.4%) taken by version 8.0. As for Android Nougat, the v7.0 and v7.1 add up to 29.3% of the handsets. Furthermore, Android 6.0 Marshmallow takes 21.6% of the total Android OS share and is still the highest when it comes to OS adoption.
Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop take around 18.3%, while the OS version before this, Android 4.4 Kitkat takes 7.8% of the entire Android OS market share. For the older OS iterations, Android Jelly Bean, which includes v4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3 sits on 3.2% of all the Android-running devices, while Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread have 0.3% share each.
This year Google announced that some other non-Pixel smartphones will come as a part of Android P beta program. The list included Sony Xperia XZ2, Essential Phone, Nokia 7 Plus, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21 and the upcoming OnePlus 6. While Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6 and Essential Phone have received the update, rest are yet to get the latest OS version.
