Apple unveiled its latest iPhone models, the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR at the company’s Gather Round event in Cupertino on Wednesday. Although the new phones took the centre stage at the event, the company also announced the launch of its Apple Watch Series 4 at the Steve Jobs Theatre. As the new iteration of Apple Watch brings along several new changes, we are here to give you an insight into the improvements over last year’s model. Without wasting any more time, let’s discuss what all has changed in a year. Related read: Top features of the Apple Watch Series 4
One of the most noteworthy changes that has come about with the Apple Watch Series 4 comes in the form of display design. The first three generations of the Apple Watch featured almost identical designs, but with Series 4, the company has stretched the display from edge-to-edge and offered a larger screen on the watch. As a result, the company is now offering the watch in a larger size than last year as well.
While the Apple Watch 3 was offered in 38mm and 42mm case sizes, the Series 4 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes. With a larger display, you also get a sharper screen resolution that allows watchOS 5 to show more content on the display than on Watch Series 3. Additionally, all variants of the new smartwatch come with ceramic and sapphire backs. To recall, in case of the Apple Watch Series 3, only the LTE variants got this design element.
Although the Apple Watch Series 3 also featured a digital crown just like earlier models, the digital crown on Watch Series 4 offers haptic feedback when you turn it. If you are the sort of person who misses the mechanical feel offered by regular watches, the new variant of Apple’s smartwatch has you covered.
To make things better, the Apple Watch Series 4 promises to offer a 50 percent increased loudspeaker volume. In the presentation, Apple claimed that the users will be surprised how loud the speaker is on such a small device as this smartwatch.
The Apple Watch Series 4 is powered by an all-new S4 chipset from the company, which has a 64-bit dual-core CPU and a comparatively powerful GPU than the last year’s model. As per the company’s claims, the chipset is twice as faster as last year. If you were hoping for an improved battery life, it is time to look away. The company has claimed that the new watch delivers an all-day battery life, which was the case with last year’s Watch Series 3 as well.
The charging process for the smartwatch remains the same from last year. Also, the new smartwatch supports wireless charging via Apple’s AirPower charging mat, which surprisingly didn’t receive any mention at the event. Considering that we got our first look at the accessory around a year back, the company has been awfully silent about the release date till now.
Although the Series 4 comes with most of the same sensors that were offered with last year’s smartwatch, the notable addition is that of the ECG monitor. In order to put the heart rate sensor in action, the users need to put their finger on the crown, which is connected to the electrodes present at the back of the watch.
This can help users to keep an active track of their heart rhythm and take precautionary measure in case of any irregularities. Unfortunately, this functionality will only be made available for the customers in the US, and that too, later this year.
Separately, the new smartwatch comes with a fall detection feature that recognises a fall and immediately tries to contact emergency services in case you get severely injured.
In terms of pricing, the base variant of the Apple Watch Series 3 is now available at a reduced price of Rs 28,900, while the pricing for the Apple Watch Series 4 is expected to start from Rs 40,900. The LTE variant of the new smartwatch will likely come with a starting price of Rs 49,900. As you can see, the new smartwatch from Apple does bring along some notable improvements to the table. The near bezel-less design with a large screen, combined with the haptic feedback offered by the digital crown, make the new watch an exciting proposition by the trillion dollar company.
