An ad is criticizing several Democratic senators for their opposition to Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh, reminding viewers of their own record blemishes.
Citizens United released a 30-second attack on Wednesday that hits Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Tom Carper of Delaware for “smearing” Kavanaugh during his nomination process. The ad reminds viewers of Feinstein’s former staffer who is alleged to be a Chinese spy; Blumenthal’s misrepresentation of his military service; and Carper once admitting to slapping his wife.
WATCH:
“President Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh, a highly qualified judge, to the Supreme Court. Now liberal Democrats will stop at nothing to smear him,” a narrator begins before condemning the three Democrats.
Feinstein — a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who withheld allegations about Kavanaugh — employed a man in her San Francisco office for 20 years. That person, Russell Lowe, has been accused of relaying information to Chinese intelligence services. The attack ad also hit Blumenthal for his false descriptions about his military service. While Connecticut’s attorney general, Blumenthal misrepresented on numerous occasions his service during the Vietnam War. The future senator served in the Marine Reserves during the war, but reportedly did not witness combat. However, the Democrat had falsely claimed more than once that he served in the Vietnam War.
The last Democrat target in the ad is Carper, who during a 1998 interview admitted to hitting his wife so hard it left a black eye.
“Did I slap my wife 20 years ago? Yes,” Carper stated. “Do I regret it? Yes. Would I do it again? No.”
The Washington Free Beacon was able to resurface a 2000 newspaper article that quoted the Democratic senator admitting to the abuse in a deposition.
“I slapped Dianne one time. It was a stupid thing to do and I … regret it now. It caused some discoloration of her left eye and some puffiness,” Carper was quoted as saying.
Despite voting in favor of Kavanaugh in 2006 when former President George W. Bush nominated him to be a U. S. Circuit judge, Carper has made clear that he does not support him for the Supreme Court.
