Captain Marvel, the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has finally been unveiled in all of its glory. Entertainment Weekly has revealed the first official look at the character, set to be played by Brie Larson, on its website on Wednesday. The magazine’s cover image shows Larson in full Captain Marvel get-up and it’s the first time we’ve seen Carol Danvers (officially) in her costume). The character’s iconic red and blue ensemble, complete with gold trimming and gold star on the chest, is present and shows that Marvel has opted to keep Captain Marvel’s attire as it’s depicted in the comics. Speaking about playing the legendary heroine, Larson told Entertainment Weekly what film fans can expect to see from Captain Marvel on the silver screen.
“She can’t help but be herself,” Larson revealed. “She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face. She’s also quick to jump to things, which makes her amazing in battle because she’s the first one out there and doesn’t always wait for orders. But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw.”
Captain Marvel – real name Carol Danvers – gains her powers after her DNA is spliced with that of a Kree warrior, an galactic race of beings, during an explosion. She gains superhuman strength, endurance, stamina and durability, as well as the ability to fly, and fire energy bursts from her hands. Captain Marvel’s story is set in the 1990s, and sees the return of Samuel L. Jackson as S. H. I. E. L. D operative Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser. Jude Law and Gemma Chan also join the star-studded cast as Mar-Vell and Minn-Erva respectively. Captain Marvel is due to be released in cinemas on March 8,2019, and will act as a precursor to her involvement in Avengers 4 later that year.
