Democrats are still calling for an FBI investigation of the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh — as if their actual preferred investigators in the media hadn’t already failed in massive efforts to corroborate the claims.
Yes, their preferred probers. Democrats plainly sicced the press on Christine Blasey Ford back when she was still determined to remain anonymous: She says she decided she might as well go public only after reporters showed up at her workplace and began contacting her colleagues.
Similarly, Democratic staff were investigating Deborah Ramirez’s claims without alerting the Senate Judiciary Committee to the rumored allegations. Their leaks seem to have gotten both The New Yorker and The New York Times on the story.
It’s beyond obvious that the Times and other outlets have now contacted not just the people named as potential witnesses by both women, but practically everyone in Kavanaugh’s high-school class and much of his Yale circle.
Heck, the Times has now done an in-depth investigation of Kavanaugh’s high-school yearbook.
And, Yale alums have been e-mailing among themselves all summer digging for possible dirt. Both Ramirez and Ford were reaching out to old friends and classmates looking for corroboration.
Yet all this has produced nothing but the two accusers themselves — one of whom admits her recollections are hazy at best.
Yes, the lack of certain knowledge is frustrating. It has swing votes like Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) wishing for an FBI probe, saying it would “sure clear up all the questions, wouldn’t it?”
No, it wouldn’t: By law, the FBI can’t do a criminal investigation when no federal crime has been alleged. And it can’t actually compel anyone to talk, nor do its background investigations involve determining which witnesses to believe. That’s the senators’ job.
Ford will get a chance to present her case Thursday (assuming no last-minute change of heart). Kavanaugh will respond, and then it will up to the Senate to vote.
Calling for an “investigation” is just code for what Dems really want: Stalling.
