Former Sen. John Danforth said on CNN Wednesday that the allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh are harmful to him and his family.

Danforth, who introduced Justice Clarence Thomas in his 1991 nomination hearing, compared the Anita Hill allegations to the current allegations against Kavanaugh.
“The whole thing was torture for a human being,” Danforth said, referring to Anita Hill’s accusations against Thomas. “[Clarence] was a friend of mine and everything he believed in was under attack. You know, it was really awful. He was just humiliated by the whole darned experience.”
Danforth lamented the fact that Kavanaugh now has to deal with similar attacks to his character and reputation.
“This is like reliving that,” he asserted. “This is just a man who’s had a sterling reputation… and he’s got a family, and he’s got two little daughters, and then this thing comes up.”
“There’s got to be some reasonable end to the torment. And the longer it goes on, the more hurtful it is to the human being,” Danforth said, stating concern that Kavanaugh’s reputation and family are “in jeopardy because one person makes a charge about something that happened 30-some odd years ago.”
Senate Judiciary Republicans have scheduled a hearing for Monday morning so that Kavanaugh and his accuser can address the sexual assault allegations, but the accuser said she will not attend until the FBI investigates her claim.
