How Lady Gaga used fashion as a ‘form of protection’

Lady Gaga has become synonymous with outrageous fashion over the past decade — but according to the pop icon, those crazy costumes were as much «a form of protection» as they were a provocation.
Lady Gaga has become synonymous with over-the-top dramatic dressing over the past decade, modeling everything from a meat dress to a jacket constructed entirely of Kermit the Frog dolls.
But for the 32-year-old pop icon, those outrageous looks were as much “a form of protection” as they were a provocation.
“For me, fashion and art and music have always been a form of armor,” Gaga told Vogue for the magazine’s October cover story. “I just kept creating more and more fantasies to escape into, new skins to shed. And every time I shed a skin, it was like taking a shower when you’re dirty: getting rid of, washing off, shedding all of the bad, and becoming something new.”
In addition to using crazy costumes as a form of escapism, the musician said she also used them to rebel against the pop-star status quo.
“I just remember feeling so irritated at the thought that I had to conform to being ‘normal,’ or less of whatever I was already born as,” she explained. “It was sort of like a very polite ‘F–k off.’”
And although Gaga’s been stepping out in a series of less eccentric, more sophisticated looks lately to promote her big-screen debut in “A Star Is Born,” she’s still got a fondness for bold fashion — as evident by the multi-room mini museum inside her Malibu mansion.
As revealed in her Vogue profile, Gaga’s locked chambers of couture contain everything from custom pieces she’s worn in her various music videos to Hedi Slimane-era Saint Laurent to archival Gianni Versace looks from the 1990s.
“I wear some of it, but I mostly collect it to keep and preserve to give to a museum one day,” Gaga explained.
