In the latest attempt to portray Judge Brett Kavanaugh as a hypocrite and a liar, journalists and others are framing him as someone who is limning himself falsely as a “choir boy” in high school. Politico wrote, “To hear Kavanaugh tell it recently, he has lived a thoroughly wholesome, God-fearing life with nothing to hide.”
Nate Silver of statistics fame, argued that it was “pretty obvious” that Kavanaugh “lied about his drinking/partying habits.”
Politico’s Carrie Budoff Brown posited that Kavanaugh offered “dueling versions of himself.”
Yet the actual transcript from Kavanaugh’s interview with Martha MacCallum on Fox reveals something quite different: he admitted there was sometimes drinking among members of his high school, but also said simply that he had never blacked out from drinking. He never posed as a “choir boy,” as Charles C. W. Cooke of National Review noted.
