He has been charged with felonious assault.
MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI — A Muskegon area man who allegedly held a knife to a woman’s throat and threatened to drown her in a lake is facing felonious assault and domestic violence charges.
Carlton Gerard Gibbons, 30, of Twin Lake faces up to eight years in prison because of previous convictions.
It’s alleged that on Aug. 16, he choked, hit, and grabbed a woman, according to an affidavit for a warrantless arrest submitted by a Michigan State Police trooper. In addition, the affidavit alleges that Gibbons held a knife to the woman’s throat, threatening to kill her and also to drown her in a lake, according to the affidavit.
The assaults allegedly occurred at Gibbons home.
Gibbons is charged as a third offense habitual offender due to prior felony convictions for carrying a concealed weapon in 2015 and felonious assault in 2016. As a result, the maximum four-year sentence for felonious assault is doubled. Gibbons also is charged with aggravated domestic violence, inflicting serious injury, which is a one-year misdemeanor.
Actual lengths of sentences are determined by judges based on state guidelines.
Gibbons was arraigned in Muskegon County District Court on Sept. 4 and posted a $20,000 cash or surety bond.
