A poll released Saturday shows that Americans are deeply divided over testimony given by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford at Thursday’s dramatic Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
41 percent of Americans said in a YouGov survey that they «definitely» or «probably» believed the testimony of Ford, who on Thursday laid out her accusation of sexual assault allegedly committed by Kavanaugh at a party when the two were in high school.
A slightly lower amount, 35 percent, said that they «definitely» or «probably» believed Kavanaugh’s testimony, which directly followed Ford’s on Thursday and was marked by Kavanaugh angrily rebuking Democratic members of the Judiciary panel for the allegations which surfaced after his confirmation hearings had ended.
When it came to which person was lying, Americans were slightly less split. 38 percent of Americans believe Kavanaugh «probably» or «definitely» lied at some point during his testimony, compared to just 30 percent who said the same about Ford’s testimony.
The results were split deeply among partisan lines, while independent voters were almost evenly split. 73 percent of Democrats believed Ford’s testimony, while 74 percent of Republicans believed Kavanaugh. A slightly higher number of Republicans, 14 percent, believe Ford over Democrats who believe Kavanaugh (11 percent).
33 percent of independents said they believed Ford, while 33 percent said they believed Kavanaugh.
Thursday’s hearing caused little movement overall in Americans’ view of whether Kavanaugh should be confirmed, according to YouGov, which found that 80 percent of respondents who answered a previous poll before the hearing gave the same answer on whether or not he should be confirmed by the full Senate.
Overall, 41 percent of Americans say Kavanaugh’s nomination should be opposed, while 36 percent support it, a result not significantly different from YouGov’s poll taken on Sept. 22, according to the poll website.
YouGov’s most recent survey contacted 2,607 Americans between Sept. 27-28. Information about polling methods and a margin of error were not immediately available.
