A recent post on Reddit reveals a conversation from an Activision support rep confirming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 won’t be using the familiar Supply Drop system.
Even though Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has only been available for a few days, the game has already proven to be a hit with fans as it quickly broke Activision’s digital sales record across all platforms. This number includes giant franchises like Destiny, Skylanders, and even previous Call of Duty titles as well. As the multiplayer-focused title continues to hook players with new modes like Blackout, one feature that is missing from this year’s title are supply drops. As it turns out, it seems that Treyarch may have something else up its sleeves.
In a post on Reddit, user GrandPaladin22 revealed that a friend contacted Activision Support to discuss an issue with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Before signing off with the support technician, the topic of supply drops was brought up and when players could expect to see them. Surprisingly, the tech revealed that Supply Drops are not being added to the game at all as Treyarch is planning on adding a system that gives players a new way to get the items that they want.
While new details on what sort of system Treyarch would be implemented wasn’t revealed, it does confirm that a microtransaction system is still coming. It’s possible that Treyarch could be taking a page out of fellow Activision developer Bungie’s playbook by adding an in-game store like Eververse within Destiny 2. Players earn random drops once they hit max level or can spend a special currency on items that switch out every week. On the other hand, with Blackout proving to be a hit with players, perhaps Treyarch may be adding an in-game store like Fortnite where skins and items are made available for purchase for a limited time, then rotate out every few days or so.
Adding to the Fortnite connection is a recently deleted blog post that revealed Treyarch and Activision are bringing a battle pass loot system into the game sometime in the future. Known as Supply Stream, players can unlock new gear for advancing levels in the battle pass, and even get a free 10 level boost when purchasing the next season’s pass. Reward details weren’t provided in the leak but players can expect uniforms, weapon variants and emotes. It’s worth remembering that until there’s an official reveal, details surrounding this battle pass system could change.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is now available for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
