President Trump had a sassy retort Monday for singer Taylor Swift after she endorsed Democratic Tennessee Senate candidate Phil Bredesen — saying he likes her music “about 25 percent less now.”
Returning to the White House after a speech to police chiefs in Florida, Trump was asked about Swift backing Bredesen against Republican Marsha Blackburn in her adopted home state of Tennessee.
“I’m sure Taylor Swift has nothing or doesn’t know anything about her,” the president said. “And let’s say I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now, OK?”
The president also mentioned a poll that showed Blackburn 8 points ahead.
“She’s leading now, substantially, which is good,” Trump said.
The broader array of polls shows Blackburn and Bredesen neck-and-neck in the race to fill the Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who’s retiring.
Swift chose to endorse Bredesen and Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), who’s running for re-election in Nashville’s safe Democratic House district, with less than 48 hours before voter registration closes in the state.
She won’t appear on the campaign trail with Bredesen because she’ll be on tour, heading to Australia in mid-October through Election Day, and then on to New Zealand and Japan.
Sources said she registered for an absentee ballot in the state.
A rep for Swift wouldn’t say whether she plans to donate financially to the campaigns.
