One of Houston’s art icons got a dazzling upgrade Saturday night.
The famed We Love Houston sign in the East End was transformed into a laser light spectacular, part of a series by local laser artists JD3 Lasers.
«This is our second out of a big project that we’re doing called celebrate Houston where we do projection mapping over existing artwork and monuments that make Houston special,» laser artist Meganne Money said. «We are planning on doing more.»
The 10-minute show drew a small crowd of onlookers from nearby bars and nightlife, most of whom snapped pictures or took video to post on social media.
The sign, located near the intersection of Polk Street and Emancipation Avenue, was recently moved to its new home from along the Katy Freeway. The light show took several weeks to prepare since the 3D artwork required tedious laser programming.
Saturday’s show wasn’t the first time JD3 Lasers has brought a Houston landmark to life. Weeks ago, the company transformed the Be Someone graffiti above the North Freeway into a similar piece of work. .
That installation was their inaugural show, the first of many to come.
Money said the next time you see a laser show by JD3 Lasers will likely be another secret event.
«The rogue vibe that comes with these planned surprises is kind of part of what makes it fun and interesting,» Money said.
