A cheerleader for the San Francisco 49ers kneeled during the national anthem of Thursday’s home game against the Raiders in San Francisco.
While all cheerleaders stood in a uniform position during the anthem, one can be seen kneeling alone in line.
Kneeling during the national anthem to raise awareness around injustices facing people of color in America began when quarterback Colin Kaepernick first took a knee in 2016 when playing for the 49ers.
Kaepernick later became a free agent after facing backlash for his pregame anthem protest. He has remained unsigned since becoming the face of the movement among NFL players who choose to kneel during the anthem.
Kaepernick filed a grievance last year accusing NFL owners of colluding to keep him out of the league and an arbitrator ruled his case will go to trial.
This season, two Miami Dolphins players knelt during the pregame playing of the national anthem in their season opener.
Kaepernick thanked the players, saying “their courage will move the world forward.”
