Here’s how you can get around the map quickly in Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 has a vast, varied open world that is one of the most detailed to date, most of which is explored via horseback. It’s an immersive experience, with even the most simple of journeys turning into adventures in their own right, but sometimes you just want to get somewhere as quickly as possible, right?
Thankfully, there are a few ways to fast travel across the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2, and here is where we explain how. For other RDR2 help, here’s how to pay off your Bounty, how to clean and maintain your weapons and how to unlock the leather working tools too.
It should come as no surprise that the travel methods of the time – trains and stagecoaches – are utilised as fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2, but it’s not as simple as you might think.
First up, you’ll have to pay for the privilege of using the train or stagecoach, with fees rising the further afield you want to travel. Secondly, you can’t just warp around on your map like in other games; instead, you have to physically go to the train station or Stagecoach boarding point to use them.
Stagecoaches can be found on the map, and are represented by an icon that resembles a wooden sign pointing in two different directions. Trains, on the other hand, require a ticket that has to be bought in advance from the local Post Office, represented by an envelope icon.
The locations on offer vary too; while both forms of transport will only take you to previously visited locations, the train will (somewhat obviously) only be able to take you to towns that feature train stations. Stagecoaches are more flexible in this respect, and can take you to pretty much anywhere you’ve visited that has a road.
The good news is that there is a way to fast travel from your camp to locations across the vast open world, but you have to unlock it first. Fast travel from camp is unlocked by purchasing the “Next in Line” camp upgrade, and while it’s a costly upgrade at around $325, it’ll provide a fast, free way to get around the map.
You can access camp upgrades by taking a look at the Ledger next to the donation box at camp. The fast travel upgrade can be found a few pages in, and is the second upgrade in the list – you’ll have to upgrade Dutch’s lodgings before you’ll be able to take care of your own.
Once you’ve unlocked the upgrade, you’ll find a map attached to the rear of the stagecoach next to Arthur’s lodgings. You can use the map to travel to a variety of locations, from towns you’ve visited to other significant locations, but there is a catch.
The camp fast travel is one way only, so be sure to consider the journey back before heading off. If you go to a town on the other side of the map, you’ll have to either ride all the way back to camp yourself or pay a hefty fee to use the train or stagecoach.
