Foldable Smartphones could be the next generation of smartphones to come. South Korean-based Electronics firm, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. who are working on bring the foldable smartphone to its users, have on Thursday, according to media reports, unveiled a prototype of their foldable smartphone at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC 2018) in San Francisco, California.
The unveiling was done by Samsung’s SVP of Mobile Product Marketing Justin Denison.
The anticipated smartphone’s form factor is based on an Infinity Flex Display development in collaboration with Google. The form factor is aimed to offer users with the ability to transform a smartphone into a tablet. According to reports by Techly, Samsung showed how the device looks like a regular smartphone when folded, but opens up into a tablet-sized device with a 7.3-inch display when opened up like a book.
Applications featured on the cover display move to the larger display once the hardware unfolds. Samsung also claimed that its all-new interface design called ‘One UI’ will enable the device to simultaneously open up to three active apps on the larger display. One UI was unveiled today at the conference specifically designed to make the experience more natural and comfortable for one-handed use than the existing Samsung Experience UX.
The handset is said to have an advanced polymer protective layer to keep the display durable yet flexible, and a special foldable adhesive helps keep the device together while folded.
As Android Police reports, in a developer session following the keynote at the SDC 2018 venue, Samsung revealed that the cover display of its first foldable device will have a resolution of 840×1960 pixels along with a screen density of 420dpi and the smallest screen width of 320dp. The foldable display, which sits under the cover display, on the other hand, is said to have a resolution of 1536×1960 pixels along with a screen density of 420dpi and the smallest screen width of 585dp.
Samsung didn’t mention on when the final product will be out. But we should probably see one next year.
